Ain’t Misbehavin’ S1 E3

First UK air date: 11 August 1997 (ITV)

Episode 3 of 3

Eddie comes round after having lapsed into one of the trance-like blackouts that ended his hopes of becoming an RAF pilot and explains to Eric the nature of his illness and his attempts to woo Dolly Nightingale.

Dolly has been convinced by Eddie that he really is a pilot so she invites along to an RAF Officers’ party. The problem is he doesn’t even have his old Forces outfit to help him carry on the deception until wide-boy Eric assures him that he can put his hands on just the right thing – a couple of looted uniforms that are sure to impress the Air force chiefs.

All goes well until Dolly’s suspicious fiancé Roger discovers that Eddie and Eric look uncannily like a couple of big band musicians seen performing at the Coco Club.

After the party Eric takes Eddie on the borrowed motorbike and sidecar to the underground MOD dump stockpiled with wartime goods. As the pair snoop around what is basically the nation’s wartime survival kit, Eddie goes into another trance while rifling through top secret documents.

He comes round and realises that he and Eric must make their escape with the incriminating documents that will expose the underworld plot to loot the dump and sell off the booty on the black market. At first the looted uniforms help them to avoid detection, but before long the alarm is raised and a dramatic gun chase ensues as they flee across country.

Back in London their efforts appear to have been futile until a mix-up of brown envelopes finally saves Maxie Morrell’s London gangland from being overtaken by the Glasgow mob.

Down at the Coco Club, Roger arrives with Dolly, determined to expose Eddie as a fraud. His plan backfires as Dolly confesses that Eddie is the only man for her.
